Copying elements from the screen or desktop

OS X has built-in functions made for copying elements from the desktop and application windows.

  • ⌘+⇧+3 captures the whole screen
  • ⌘+⇧+4 captures a custom rectangle (click and drag over the screen region you want to capture)
  • ⌘+⇧+4 then space captures a specific window (move the mouse cursor over the desired window, then click)
  • Press esc to cancel.

Legend:

  • This is the Command or “Apple” key.
  • This is the Shift key.
  • + The plus sing indicate to press the keys together, simultaneously.
  • A number indicates to press that number. In other words 3 means press the 3 key.
